Another year over and the garden is prepped for New Year!

Another year over for the Garden Team and time to reflects on our highlights from 2019.

Today was another soggy day with lots of soggy leaves to deal with. We raked and swept as many as we could, despite the strong winds whipping leaves into a frenzy. We trimmed and tidied the borders and were satisfied that we left the garden as well prepared for winter as possible. We gathered armfuls of greenery and berries, which are now decorating the Garden Room.

Our coffee break this week was time for a quick review of the year – the consensus was the garden has become mature and settled in a very pleasing way. We hope you all agree!

  • The Lavender plants have now grown into a perfect low hedge – a welcoming new entrance to the centre.
  • Lovely new boxes by the main door are a great success with well chosen permanent planting.
  • We have a new pergola in place, already planted with beautiful white climbing roses.
  • National Garden Scheme Open Day was very successful, despite the heavy rain!
  • A big highlight of the year was being nominated for the Queen’s Award for Volunteers – very exciting and flattering.

There was lots more, of course, too much to mention!

The garden continues to look and feel gorgeous in all its different aspects and it’s all down to our brilliant team – week in, week out in fine weather and foul they turned up, worked hard and best of all laughed a lot together, always bonding over coffee, cake and chat.

Next year we plan to spend more time looking at different areas of the garden and deciding together how we can improve them. We all agreed that – in line with environmental concerns – we should think seriously about more tree planting. Watch this space!

Thank you to all the team for their ongoing support. We hope that you have enjoyed the gardens because of their hard work.
