If you’ve attended one of our Introduction Days, Living Well courses or Treatment Support Clinics and you live within easy distance of our National Centre, we offer a number of regular groups.

Like much of what we do, the groups focus on managing stress, staying active and eating well.  They’re great for keeping you motivated, making new friends and maintaining your connection to Penny Brohn.

Meets 1st Thursday of the month (1.30-3.30pm)

Our Penny Brohn community is the heart and soul of the Centre. It’s open to anyone who has used our services and who wants to stay in regular contact.

We offer a range of activities based on different elements of the Bristol Whole Life Approach, many of which are peer led.

Meets every 4th Wednesday (11-12.30pm) in the art room

Another of our community groups, this regular session is a chance for you to be creative while connecting with like-minded people.

It’s open to anyone who has used our services and who wants to stay in regular contact.

Meet others in a relaxed setting, have fun and lift your spirits.

Penny Brohn Community Choir runs every Wednesday 6 – 7.15pm during term time. You don’t have to be able to read music and there’s no audition.

Recent studies have shown the positive health benefits of community singing for all, but especially for anyone living with cancer. Singing is great for the immune system and does wonders for stress levels, improving your breathing and sleep patterns.  It also gives you the opportunity to develop a connection with others and boost your sense of wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem.

Most importantly, though – it’s a lot of fun!

Performances are given three or four times a year, but you won’t be expected to perform if you don’t feel confident or able to: the important thing is the singing.

The choir is organised and led by Doug Watts, and includes singers from every background and of every ability – the emphasis is on creating a supportive space for you to find your natural voice. We learn songs by ear, so there is no need to read music – all you need is a connection to Penny Brohn.

Our varied songbook covers British Folk, American Soul and even some South African community songs – part of the joy of community singing is to welcome songs from around the globe.

Rehearsals are held weekly at Penny Brohn HQ, 6-7.15pm, with refreshments and get together beforehand from 5:30pm.

We don’t charge, but voluntary donations of £5 to help cover costs will be gratefully received.

Tuesdays 2-3pm

mg_1226_thumb_webAlso known as a type of total-body walking, Nordic walking uses poles to exercise your upper body as well as your legs, and is excellent all-over exercise that’s both gentle and accessible.  This hour-long weekly group session is guided by an accredited Nordic Walking instructor, and explores the countryside around our National Centre.

Wednesdays – Beginners – 2-3.15pm | Improvers – 3.45-5pm

YogaYogathrive is yoga specially adapted for those affected by cancer. It combines physical postures with breathing techniques and meditation and is gentle, supportive, sociable and fun. The seven-week Beginners course is endlessly repeatable, and when you’re feeling up to stretching yourself further, the Improvers class lets you take your practice further.

Qi Gong (literally, ‘life energy cultivation’) is an ancient Chinese system of gentle exercises, movements, breathing and meditation techniques that support your energy and wellbeing.  Movement is flowing and slow, and at a level where everyone can join in and benefit, whatever your current levels of fitness or mobility.

Guided relaxation exploring a range of different relaxation techniques that can help you relax wherever you are. This small drop-in group can be responsive to your individual needs and requirements with space for questions and sharing.

Explore the wide variety of meditation techniques practised around the world, share your experience and get ideas on how to make meditation a regular part of your routine. Usually includes some gentle movement. This group is open to anyone with a connection to Penny Brohn.

Led by one of our experienced Nutritional Therapists, you will see and taste three different healthy recipes, with useful hints and information about food ingredients. This group usually runs 3 times a month – so make sure you check dates with Reception.
