Help change life with cancer. For good

Final outputs launched from Realising the Value

The Realising the Value programme, led by Nesta and the Health Foundation, has conducted a thorough analysis of the evidence for person- and community-centred approaches, worked with five frontline sites across England, and published tools, recommendations and economic modelling to show how they can be successfully implemented. Penny Brohn UK was the partner site for self-management education.

Aimed at health and care system leaders, commissioners and front-line professionals, the resources from the programme conclude that person- and community- centred approaches are pivotal to improving wellbeing outcomes during financially restrained times.

“We are delighted with the project’s successes and to lead on self-management education. For over 35 years, we have helped people and families facing cancer to self-manage their health in areas including diet, exercise and relaxation, so they can live as well as possible. It’s encouraging to see NHS England acknowledge and look to adopt self-management approaches. Self-management encourages people to take responsibility for their health, leading to a healthier society that doesn’t totally rely on the healthcare system. If this model was rolled out across England – the NHS could save millions of pounds.”
