Volunteering can be rewarding and it is a great way to make a big difference in your community, meet new people and gain new skills. It can also help to reduce stress, and it can help you kick-start/advance your career. If you are thinking about volunteering this Volunteers Week, we have compiled a list of 10 different ways you can lend your skills and time.

1.Help out at events

If you enjoy working as part of a team, or if you are looking for something that is a one off commitment, helping out at events might be a perfect option for you. There are various things that you can do at an event, from handing out medals or goody bags, managing a refreshment point, or setting up stands. 2.Work in the gardens

Garden Volunteer

If you are looking for something to do outdoors and are interested in gardening, you could volunteer to work in the gardens. It is a good way of staying active and can also be a calming experience. There are many things that you can do in the garden, such as, designing floral displays, maintaining and planting horticultural displays.

3.Drive clients

Have you got a driving licence, flexible commitment and have your own car? A great way to volunteer is providing transport for clients to help them access services provided by a charity. It is a perfect way to meet new people and it will give you an opportunity to help others in a practical and supportive way.

4.Run a local community quiz

Hosting a quiz night is a fun way to fundraise and raise awareness for a charity, as well as engaging with people in your local community. If this is something that you would be interested in doing, we provide fundraising materials to help you plan and host an event. This is an excellent way to gain experience in organising an event, meeting and socialising with different people.

5.Shop work

Volunteering as a shop assistant for a charity can provide you with some excellent experience, and utilize your interpersonal and good communication skills. You can help to increase sales and income for a charity and ensure good customer service. This position would be perfect for individuals who are enthusiastic, friendly and have the ability to get along with people.

6.Admin work

Another way you can volunteer is by doing some admin work. This would usually involve doing general administration tasks such as drafting documents, making phone calls, scheduling, and they can vary depending on the department you will be working in. If you are interested in a career or would like gain new skills in administration, a good place to start would be by volunteering.


At Penny Brohn we have a helpline which is a vital first point of contact for people who have been affected by cancer. Volunteering as a helpline volunteer you will be providing a listening ear and information to a variety of people, predominantly through the phone and email. This is a great rewarding experience in working in an office and in counselling.


Working in a library is an excellent place to work if you like books and enjoy working on your own in a peaceful environment. This role would suit someone who is organised and someone who can commit to a few hours per week. Our library volunteers help clients explore our diverse collection of books and assisting with library displays.

9.Meet and Greet

You can volunteer to meet and greet clients arriving for residential courses. The duties of this role may include showing people where their rooms are, making them feel welcome, doing an orientation tour and outlining the evening schedule. This role would be suitable for friendly and enthusiastic individuals, who can get along with dfferent types of people.


There are a lot of ways that you can raise money for a charity. This can include organising an event such as,running, swimming, and hosting cake sale. Another way you can raise money is by taking part in an event such as a marathon or a trek and raise money through donation and sponsorship.
