January has brought the exciting news that our lovely old Ginkgo tree is the Somerset Champion for girth. This was confirmed by the Tree Register of Britain and beats the one at Tyntesfield, the previous record holder.
The height of the tree is 15.3 metres and the girth measured in 3 places due to its bumpy nature – 4.22m at 1.5m from the ground , 3.75m at 1.2m and 3.8m at 1m.
Elsewhere, pockets of colour can be found all over the garden and the Snowdrops are being to flower near the Gingko with the promise of many more down in the woodland and in the Courtyard. The daffodils are later this year , but by the main gate, impressing visitors, the first are well out and 2 or 3 more varieties will ensure daffodils there through to April.
