Help change life with cancer. For good

Brave boy shaves his head to support his mum

Adam braved a head shave yesterday in support of his mum who has lost her hair after undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

He’s just 11 years old and said “I hear children saying they struggle with Covid 19 but my struggle is with cancer. My mum is going through terrifying chemo and has lost her hair. I want to shave mine so she doesn’t feel alone.”

Adam decided to fund raise for Penny Brohn UK because he saw how much it helped his mum cope with her cancer.  His mum Emma was diagnosed just before lockdown in March and it came as a complete shock. She knew very little about cancer and felt terrified and angry. She thought she’d received a death sentence. When she told her husband, all she could say was she was sorry, but he told her it was going to be all right.

Then lockdown came and her operation was cancelled. The children were at home which meant that Adam and his brother were much more aware of what was happening to their Mum. It was a frightening time for everyone.

Thankfully, Emma’s friend, Heather, a cancer survivor herself put Emma in touch with her son, Dr Duncan Still, who is a doctor at Penny Brohn UK.

To Emma this was a life-line.

She explains, Dr Duncan helped me understand what cancer is, how to keep well while I waited for my operation, advice about diet, useful supplements and exercise.…All this made me feel less helpless and take control of my fear as well as this vicious illness. My hospital concentrated on operations and Chemo treatment, but nothing about what I could do for myself to keep healthy. We began to open up to the children and explained more about what was going to happen and our positive plan to stay healthy (thanks to Penny Brohn advice) and cope with whatever happens.”

A huge well done to Adam for his bravery. And a thank you for raising funds and awareness at such a challenging time.
