Stephen was devastated to be diagnosed with cancer but Penny Brohn UK helped him feel like a person again.
"I incorporated these changes into my lifestyle and tried to make it fun. Since changing my diet I have had some of the best meals I have ever had!"
In summer 2017 I started to feel uncomfortable in my abdominal area. I went to my GP who did a prostate examination and said it seemed fine but referred me to the hospital for an appointment six weeks later. Whilst I was waiting for the appointment I started to feel more uncomfortable and decided to book an appointment at a private hospital where I had an MRI scan and was referred to a consultant. The consultant told me I had prostate cancer and although he wasn’t sure, he thought it was advanced.
The diagnosis turned my life upside down. I had been planning a career change and this news caused all my plans to come crashing down.
Before starting treatment my next door neighbour suggested that I get in touch with Penny Brohn UK. I went to an Introduction Day with my wife and the information helped me to make changes to my lifestyle to help me through four and a half months of chemotherapy. I completely changed my diet and started eating a predominately plant-based diet. My wife and I also began meditating twice day, using the meditation techniques we learnt on the course. These changes were a huge help for me during chemotherapy. I incorporated these changes into my lifestyle and tried to make it fun. Since changing my diet I have had some of the best meals I have ever had!
My whole family have got involved with Penny Brohn UK and the lifestyle changes I have made as a result of the support I received. My wife and children also eat predominately plant-based foods and my daughters have taken part in fundraising events with one running the London Marathon and another running the Bristol Half.
I was devastated to be diagnosed with cancer but Penny Brohn UK has helped me reframe it. I can’t change my diagnosis but I have learnt to turn it on its head. When I was in hospital I felt out of control and that decisions about my care were being made behind closed doors. Penny Brohn UK made me feel like a person again and helped me take back control of my life. Alongside the conventional medical treatment, Penny Brohn UK has helped me to help myself.
During chemotherapy I couldn’t work but I started volunteering with people with mental health problems and also started volunteering at Penny Brohn UK to share my story and help other people who have been diagnosed with cancer. I believe that if something makes you feel better then it helps.
