After a diagnosis of prostate cancer, Ramesh received radiotherapy at GenesisCare. While there, he was also introduced to a Penny Brohn Wellbeing Consultant and his eyes were opened to the benefits of holistic and integrative care.
Thanks to Penny Brohn UK’s invaluable support and the excellent and friendly service provided by GenisisCare, I’m confident I will come out of this a more balanced and stronger person at the ripe old age of 71.
My introduction to Penny Brohn UK was totally fortuitous. Firstly, I developed prostate cancer late last year (2020). My Consultant Oncologist recommended a radiotherapy treatment. I was fortunate to be referred to GenesisCare in Elstree who introduced me to Penny Brohn UK.
As it happens, I have been making annual donations to Cancer Research UK for some 30 years, but I had not come across Penny Brohn UK before. Clearly, both institutions do vital work, but my eyes were recently opened to the holistic approach used by Penny Brohn UK in looking after people with cancer. To my mind Penny Brohn UK requires much wider publicity and exposure.
I was truly impressed with two philosophies embraced by the charity. First, the holistic approach for the care of the ‘mind, spirit, emotions heart and soul’ whilst the medical profession provides the treatment for the actual cancer. The second, equally important and worthy philosophy is: ‘that everybody should have equal access to the practical, emotional and social support they need to live life as fully as possible with the impact of cancer.’ This is of course irrespective of whether they can afford such invaluable support.
The diagnosis of prostate cancer was not a big shock to me, nor caused me undue stress. This is because I have a personal philosophy of accepting what fate brings you and to deal with it in the best way possible. I was further reassured by my oncology team advising me that the prostate cancer is imminently curable and treatable.
I developed Type II diabetes some 20 years ago. Through dietary control and exercise combined with medication, I have brought this into ‘good control’. I feel much healthier as a result and considered that diagnosis a ‘blessing in disguise’.
Penny Brohn UK has opened my eyes to a whole new way to dealing with not only the prostate cancer, but life in general. My major concern regarding the radiotherapy treatment was the side effects during and after treatment. I’m now much more confident and reassured that with the therapies and online support provided by Penny Brohn UK, combined with the Exercise Medicine provided by GenesisCare, I will manage this comfortably. Though it may sound odd, once again I feel the prostate cancer is a ‘blessing in disguise’.
My immediate family members are all as enthusiastic about Penny Brohn UK and GenesisCare as I am. They've said how the Penny Brohn UK support combined with the superb GenesisCare service has made them less worried and stressed and they are all sure that this will make it much easier for Dad to handle the treatment and any potential side effects.
Thanks to Penny Brohn UK’s invaluable support and the excellent and friendly service provided by GenisisCare I’m confident I will come out of this a more balanced and stronger person at the ripe old age of 71.
And that’s not where Ramesh’s story ends. Ramesh took on a big challenge for us this year, raising much needed funds for people affected by cancer. Read more about Ramesh’s determination here.
