Penny Brohn UK

Help change life with cancer. For good

Laura’s story

Laura, Sue, Liz and Joanne, loving daughters of Marilyn, share her story and how she found Penny Brohn UK during her treatment for cancer.

Her whole life, she had always been such an inspiration to all that knew her and over the last few years, she became even more positive and inspiring than ever before. So much of this came from her attending Penny Brohn UK, which two years ago she found and took into her heart.

When asked by Mums friends and family where they could donate in her memory, without any hesitation we knew that Penny Brohn UK was the one. Leaving a financial legacy in Mum’s memory, towards this outstanding place, brought us such comfort and direction during the first few weeks of our loss.

Knowing that these memory donations would honour our Mum and help others, gave us something to focus on in heartbreaking times. The Just Giving Page was simple to set up and by the power of social media we were able to spread the word and raise over £3,000.

Our lovely, beautiful Mum, Marilyn Wootten; The kindest, warmest, funniest and most ‘lust for life’ woman. Mum lived well with cancer for nearly six years and was the strongest person we have known. We’re so extremely proud to have called her Mum.

Her whole life, she had always been such an inspiration to all that knew her and over the last few years, she became even more positive and inspiring than ever before. So much of this came from her attending Penny Brohn UK, which two years ago she found and took into her heart.

When she visited, she could completely relax and feel at peace. She made understanding friends and the supportive staff were amazing. Mum enjoyed lots of the wonderful activities that were on offer. From these she learnt how to meditate which became her solace and as a family we often joined her in many meditations which also gave us consolation. The cooking classes gave us a new insight into healthy eating, and she enjoyed experimenting her new recipes on us! We also attended Biodanza with Mum, she loved to be able to show off the great things that she was taking part in. The community spirit that users and their families experience is second to none. The weekend retreats were her particular favourites, and she always came away feeling enlightened, positive and stronger.

Prior to her memory donations, she fundraised through ‘Stomp’ and also walked the duration of her granddaughter’s 10K run around her little street, wearing her Covid mask and adorned in fancy dress! She knew how important it was to raise awareness of Penny Brohn UK and we thought it was only right to continue this in her memory.

Taken from one of her past fundraising posts, and in her own words, she said:

“When I walk through the doors, I automatically feel the warmth and love from the people that are there to help support me and also from the friends I’ve made along the way. You cannot know how valuable Penny Brohn UK is to people like me living with cancer”.

We want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving our mum the time to share and to thrive and for teaching her new ways of wellbeing. Penny Brohn UK is wonderfully incomparable.
