Tomorrow is World Health Day and we are joining the conversation about #depression, using #LetsTalk on our social media channels.

According to the latest estimates from the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 300 million people are now living with depression, which is an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015.

Depression is a common condition, which can manifest quickly or over a prolonged period of time. Depression can affect your ability to cope with everyday things such as:

  • eating
  • sleeping
  • hygiene
  • social activities
  • work

It is important to consider the impact of cancer on psychological wellbeing. People with cancer, as well as their friends and family, can feel distress at any time after a cancer diagnosis, even many years after the cancer is treated. As the cancer situation changes, they all must cope with new stressors and their feelings often change, too.

When someone has had a diagnosis of cancer, you may think that their main concerns will be around their physical health. However, people who use Penny Brohn UK’s services consistently tell us that their main cancer related concerns are around psychological and emotional issues (approximately 60%). These concerns include emotional problems, anxiety, stress and depression. Evaluation of our services has shown that we are often able to reduce the severity of people’s concerns through the support we offer.

Depression is not an inability to cope, so try not to blame yourself. Our counselling service is available to support you, should you need to discuss any psychological or emotional issue.

Research has shown that for people with cancer, counselling may be beneficial for wellbeing, anxiety, depression and helping with the sexual side effects of cancer. Counselling is a chance to share your thoughts and feelings with an experienced therapist who will listen without judgement, whether you’re the person with cancer or are supporting someone else through their experience.
