Marion, from Clevedon, started volunteering for Penny Brohn UK after her mum and brother-in-law both faced cancer. It became a cause close to her heart and now she is a meet and greeter, helping to welcome, settle in and have supper with clients when they first arrive at the centre.

Sadly, my mum and brother-in-law faced cancer, so it’s a cause close to my heart. I’ve also worked at other charities, so I know how vital volunteering is. It’s a win, win situation. Penny Brohn benefits from my time, skills and energy, while I enjoy being with inspirational clients and staff.

My Meet and Greeter role is flexible, it suits me on both a skills and personal level. I support the Night Team, helping to welcome, settle in and have supper with clients. I take them on a tour and join in the introduction and relaxation sessions. I do about two, four-hour shifts per month and it’s extremely rewarding.

I really look forward to my shifts. It feels great to contribute to something so valuable and be part of a team of professional, caring and supportive people. All the clients are so appreciative and I admire them greatly for coming on the courses, which, for first-timers, can be daunting. Clients coming for further courses are so positive about how much the previous information and practices have helped them, and how wonderful the Centre is. I always come home feeling encouraged and inspired.

You may feel nervous about volunteering, I certainly did, but, honestly, it’s an absolute honour and delight to help. The staff are supportive and clients incredibly amazing. I say, contact the Volunteering Team to discuss ways to help and what suits you. You won’t be disappointed.
